Boooootiful Bambooty Nappies: Review

20121031-102450.jpg

Some of the fluffy post that has landed on my doorstep has, quite literally, taken my breath away. I’m building up the nappy collection for my local nappy library/demo kit and I’ve had some very generous donations from local (and not so local) ladies where they’ve given their stashes of nappies away to help others and those have been amazing!

I’ve also had some very generous donations from various nappy companies and Bambooty have been absolutely incredible! They sent over an amazing array of their lovely and funky nappies for inclusion in the nappy library/ demo kit and I can’t express just how grateful I am.

I got a lovely selection, which included

2 – Small Easy Dry – Teddy/Hootybooty

1 – Medium Easy Night – Trains

1 – Medium Easy Day – Strawberry

1 – Easy One Size (this also gives a good idea of sizing for Large and XL) – Dino

2 – Boosters

1 – Roll of Liners

(apologies for the photos – I’m hoping to get my proper camera working again soon!)

The Easy Dry nappies have the added bonus of coming in their own, really cute, little wetbags – which I think is a lovely and very sensible concept. These very trim nappies have all their boosters sewn in (AIO’s) to make them really easy to put on. The bamboo/cotton/microfibre booster can be flapped outwards to make drying times easier and, I have to say, they dried remarkably quickly.

Little Missy-Clothbum came to our aid again and tested out the smaller nappies for us. Her mummy was very taken with the nappies and absolutely loved the prints! She was quite impressed at how absorbent they were as she generally prefers fitted nappies with wraps and really liked the little wetbags as it made it so simple if you’re out and about and need to change a nappy!

We also tried the Easy Night on her (although she is a little bit on the small side for a Medium at the moment). It just about fitted around her, with some very tight poppering up and lasted all night without any problems at all. These nappies have four sewn in soakers that held a remarkable amount of liquid (little Missy wees a lot at night), and are still really quite trim nappies. Again, this nappy dried in a really short amount of time and is a great addition to any nappy collection.

I was excited that my little Monkey was able to test out the Easy One Size nappy and got it prewashed as quickly as I possibly could. This nappy had a dinosaur print on it, which my little man loved as his favourite jigsaw at the moment is a gorgeous Melissa & Doug dinosaur one that he got for his birthday!

The Easy One Size has the usual BTP poppers on the front of the nappy to alter the size, which means that it can fit your baby all the way through their cloth-nappying time. It has two sewn in absorbant flaps that you can pull outwards to make drying nice and quick and also has a snap-in booster that you can take out if not needed. We used this during the day with no problems whatsoever – even during his heaviest wetting times. The nappy performed brilliantly, there was no leaking around the leg cuffs and it looked very slim under his clothes, which is always a bonus.

Thank you, Bambooty , for sending over such a gorgeous and great range of nappies. They make an excellent addition to any nappy stash and I can’t wait to loan them out/ demo them to more people!

daisytheclothbummum was sent the range of Bambooty nappies as a donation to our nappy library/demo kit. I did not receive any payment for this and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Little Lamb OSFA nappy review

20121024-135950.jpg

As some of you may already know, I’m in the process of setting up my local Nappy Library. It’s hard work but I’m slowly getting together a nice range of preloved and new, donated, nappies that I’ll be able to loan out to parents who wish to try cloth nappies before investing heavily in them (which is a very sensible idea).

Little Lamb have been fabulous in their support of the library and I really can’t thank them enough! They sent over a vast range of their wonderful nappies that will give parents a really good overview of what they have to offer.

One nappy that, I have to admit, I haven’t got myself and got a little excited about when I opened up the package – is the Little Lamb OSFA (One size fits all). This is their new Birth to Potty (BTP) nappy that I’ve been meaning to get for ages. I thought that as I was going to loaning it out to parents that I’d better give it a test run, so that I knew (hand on heart) that when I talked to parents about it, I knew exactly what it was capable of.

So, we did all the usual prewashing and put the lovely, bright yellow nappy to the test.

First of all – the outer part of the nappy is a lovely, soft material that didn’t feel at all plasticky, even after a wash. To me, that’s really important and why I tend to go for minky nappies over just PUL ones. Many nappies that I’ve bought in the past have started off nice and soft only to go all hard and plasticky after a first wash, so I was really happy that this didn’t happen.

The OSFA nappy can be used from birth to potty, via the series of snaps on the front of the nappy. This means that the rise (the crotch of the nappy) can be adjusted as your baby grows. My little Monkey isn’t quite so little anymore, so we had it full unpoppered, which worked really well.

The inserts are microfibre, which meant that as I got the nappy out of the washing machine they were almost dry already. A few hours later, on my heated airer, the whole nappy was dry! I reckon that leaving it overnight on a standard airer would do the job.

This nappy performed incredibly well during the Mr Clothbum trial, I’m pleased to say. He had it on for nearly three and half hours and during this time he did all his latest, very energetic tricks! He’s now happily toddling around, loves bumping down onto his bottom very hard and has started climbing, so the nappy was put through the mill. We also had a little rest during this time, so a compression test was also included (to see if the nappy leaks when pressed down upon for a prolonged period of time).

There were no leaks from the Little Lamb OSFA at all and the soft, elasticated cuffs around his legs didn’t leave any marks. I have to say that I was really impressed. This nappy also held in one of his mega-wees, which is very good as he manages to outwee most pocket nappies at the moment.

Thank you so much again, Little Lamb , for sending over such a fab nappy. I can’t wait to loan it out to some lucky parent to try on their little one!

I made this! (Said with lots of excitement!)

20120923-133815.jpg

I’m going to put up a proper blog post over the next few days, but I just had to break from my weekend to share this with you.

I had THE most lovely day yesterday! I went along to a nappy-class run by the lovely Zoe at Crafty Baba . I have always wanted to have a go at making my own cloth nappies, but really didn’t think that my sewing skills were up to the task.

I have a long way to go before it’s perfect for Monkey and I’ve got the pattern that suits him the best, but how’s this for a first attempt? I’m so impressed! I found out a few things about nappy making that I’ll let you in on, but I’d say that if you can – go on a course. It’s brilliant!

Waving a fond farewell – the end of RNW 2012

20120422-151254.jpg

Well…sniff….it’s here…

The final afternoon of Real Nappy Week 2012.

It’s been, emotional! It’s been, exciting! It’s been, well – quite frankly – probably a little expensive for some of you (BUT THINK OF WHAT YOU SAVED!!!)

Hopefully you managed to get out to a Real Nappy Event or two, and hopefully some of you might have either converted a friend over to the fluffy side or joined the lovely world of cloth nappies yourself!

If you’re new to them – WELCOME! Welcome to lots of fluffy fun, talking about nappies. Yes – something that you probably NEVER EVER in a million years thought that you’d be doing. Who’d have thought that nappies were so wonderful? So utterly cute!

I for one didn’t! This time last year, I was quite seriously researching cloth nappies, but actually (if I’m brutally honest) wasn’t 100% certain that I’d be using them properly (as I believed that they might, possibly be hard work).

But they’re not (YAY) and I love them! So, I hope that a few of you are going to be the same and be seasoned pros this time next year, passing on the fluffy love to some naive newbies!

So – yes – don’t forget that the Nappy Go Lucky www.nappygolucky.co.uk competition is still running and closes at 9pm tonight! You could be in the draw to win a free bumGenius FREETIME!

The draw won’t be taking place until (probably) Monday or Tuesday evening, though, as Monkey (my little winner picker) will be in bed when it closes and then he’s at nursery all day on both days, so I think that it’ll be rather tricky to get it all done before then.

You’ll just have to be kept waiting in suspense, won’t you! For one lucky winner – it’ll be worth it!!!!

Best of luck to you all and Happy Real Nappy Week x

What do you do in your FREETIME? Enter a giveaway? Go on – you know you want to!

20120416-222006.jpg

As the theme of Real Nappy Week 2012 is ‘Real Nappies… Real Easy’, the lovely owner of ‘Nappy Go Lucky’ http://www.nappygolucky.co.uk/ has kindly offered one lucky person the chance to win themselves a bumGenius Freetime nappy (poppered version).

This is quite possibly one of THE most simple nappies to use and is a very clever, fairly new addition to the cloth nappy world.

20120416-222106.jpg

Here’s what bumGenius say about their nappy:

Maximize your freetime! Cloth nappying…in one easy step!

Its a onesize, all in one cloth nappy so no more stuffing! Multiple layers of stay dry lined microfibre make this a very simple to use cloth nappy, and also quite quick drying.

20120416-222159.jpg

A really simple easy to use all in one, once again bumGenius have proved themselves to be GENIUS when it comes to cloth nappies!

One step cloth nappy – no stuffing!
Semi-attached inserts dry faster.
3×3 snap down design* adjusts the sizing to fit small, medium and large sizes (approximately 8-35+ pounds).
Trim, snug and comfortable stretchy tabs* provide a custom fit.
Available in both snap and hook & loop closure.
Gentle leg elastic contains the mess!

20120416-222259.jpg

I LOVE these nappies as they are such a perfect, easy cloth nappy that really make an awful lot of sense. They are fantastic for both first time users and the more seasoned cloth nappy addicts, and the new, vibrant bumGenius colours and prints are amazing!

So, to enter, post an answer to the question that I’m about to pose on either the Blog, Facebook (daisytheclothbummum) or via Twitter (@daisyclothbum) and you will be placed in the draw to win a bumGenius Freetime nappy of your choice from instock items.

As usual – you can answer the question via three online locations, which gives you three chances of winning! If you share the competition as well, you can get an extra entry as long as you let me know! (just one extra entry, not three – I’d find that a nightmare to keep up with everyone!)

Remember to let me know via the FB page or add #NGLdaisy to your Tweets, or I won’t be able to keep track of you all.

Before I post the question, the T&C are as follows:

The competition will close at 9pm on Sunday 22nd April 2012.
The nappy will only be posted out to a UK address.
The winner will be decided by daisytheclothbummum and is final.
The winner will be notified, and announced, as soon as possible after the giveaway closes.
After the competition closes, I’ll pick out twenty entries that are (in my eyes) the most creative and they’ll go into the ‘hat’. Monkey will then pick out a winner and I’ll document this via photos for you!
The winner’s email address will be forwarded to Nappy Go Lucky http://www.nappygolucky.co.uk/ (I’ll contact via Twitter/FB or the Blog to get this information from the winner) and will then receive an email detailing how to get their nappy!
If the winner has any problems with the nappy he/she must contact Nappy Go Lucky directly. http://www.nappygolucky.co.uk/

Disclaimer:
daisytheclothbummum gives her time freely to run this giveaway and is not being paid for running it.

Right, so now that’s all out of the way – get your thinking caps on!

As I mentioned earlier, the theme of this year’s Real Nappy Week is, “Real Nappies…Real Easy!”

So, if you were talking to someone about Real Nappies, what could you say to help promote them? To persuade them that switching to cloth will be a breeze? To let them know just how much fun they can be!

Finish off the sentence below in 20 words or less (not including the ones I’m giving you!)

REAL NAPPIES ARE REAL EASY BECAUSE…

Best of luck to everyone who enters! I’m looking forward to seeing how persuasive you can all be!

Win a fantastic Baba+Boo nappy of your choice!

20120416-214415.jpg

Wooo-hoooo! YES! It’s time for my first giveaway of the week – isn’t that exciting? I mean, ok – I’m excited and I don’t even get the chance to enter! You lucky people – all these fab offers and giveaways that are running all over the place for Real Nappy Week 2012!

Ok – so… I’ve been very lucky that not just one, but two lovely companies have offered fluffy prizes this week. The first giveaway we have is from the fabulous Baba+Boo. www.babaandboo.com

20120416-214320.jpg

The lucky winner will get to choose a nappy from Baba+Boo’s wonderful selection, which is now even bigger since they launched their new nappies and other items yesterday!

Once the winner has been chosen, I’ll let Baba+Boo know that person’s email address and – hey presto – a nappy of your choice will be yours!

20120416-214502.jpg

So, to enter, post an answer to the question that I’m about to pose on either the Blog, Facebook (daisytheclothbummum) or via Twitter (@daisyclothbum) and you will be placed in the draw to win a fab Baba+Boo nappy. www.babaandboo.com

These are nappies that I absolutely love as I know that Monkey won’t out-wee them, because they’re so thirsty! They are generously sized (but fit little ones really well), which is great as I know that they’ll last him for a long time (he’s outgrowing many of his apparently BTP nappies already at 8 months – eeek!)

As you can answer the question via three online locations, that gives you three chances of winning! Not bad, eh! Of course, it’d be fantastic if you share the competition as well, so I suppose that you can get an extra entry if you share it, and then let me know! (just one extra entry, not three – I’d find that a nightmare to keep up with everyone!)

Remember to let me know via the FB page or add #daisybababoo to your Tweets, or I won’t be able to keep track of you all.

Before I post the question, the T&C are as follows:

The competition will close at 9pm on Thursday 19th April 2012.
The winner’s email address will be forwarded to Baba+Boo (I’ll contact via Twitter/FB or the Blog to get this information from the winner).
All contact for getting the nappy will be made between the winner and Baba+Boo
If the winner has any problems with the nappy he/she must contact Baba+Boo directly.

Disclaimer:
daisytheclothbummum gives her time freely to run this giveaway and is not being paid for running it.

Right, so now that’s all out of the way – here’s your thoughtful question!

If you could pick any nappy from the Baba+Boo range, which one would it be and why?
Be as original in your response as possible – Creativity is the key to catching my attention!

It’s (nearly) REAL NAPPY WEEK 2012!!!

20120414-093051.jpg

It’s that time of year where all seasoned fluffy mummies get stupidly excited and new cloth bum mums probably look the same way that I did – ever so slightly bewildered!

April 16th – 22nd is REAL NAPPY WEEK! It’s honestly the week that most of us have been looking forward to for months.

We know, we know – they’re just nappies. But…but… they’re NOT just nappies. They are lovely fluffy bundles of gorgeousness that we thoroughly enjoy putting our babies in and have such great patterns, prints and fabrics that we can’t really resist them.

Some of us even have dreams about them…

Anywaaaaay – I digress into the realms of slight (ahem) obsession!

Real Nappy Week is a fantastic chance for new (and old) cloth mummies to get their hands on massively discounted fluff, as well as the chance to enter lots of lovely competitions and giveaways. There are some amazing bargains to be had and it’s well worth having a good look around.

Of course, it’s a fantastic marketing opportunity for companies as well, but what I love about Real Nappy Week (RNW) is that lots of councils give out free packs that they would usually charge a nominal fee for. That’s a great opportunity that you really shouldn’t miss. Have a look on your local council website to see what events they have planned – it’s often well worth your while doing so. I got hold of some fab free nappies last year that really helped to kickstart my love of cloth.

Go Real is a fantastic organisation that provides people with a great independent source of information about cloth nappies. Lots of companies and nappy advisors are part of the it and I found their information invaluable when I first started out. They always have lots of info about different events around the country and during RNW, there’s lots on there.

This year they are running their fantastic nappy giveaway again, which was wonderful last year (I got some Smart Nappies from them). Lots and lots of different companies, including Baba+Boo, Close Parent and Little Lamb have donated nappies that new cloth nappy users can win! Isn’t that a brilliant idea? Details on how people can enter will be up on the site on Monday

The theme of RNW 2012 is ‘Real Nappy… Real Easy’, so this should promote that concept – that cloth nappies really are a piece of cake to use!

My bit of advice for RNW2012 is have a look at the websites of nappies that you use/ would like to use on your baby. Chance is that they’ll either be having some offers/promotions/discounts running next week (some have actually already started), as well as competitions/ giveaways. Some of the companies run a different one each day, so it’s worth checking.

If you use Facebook or Twitter, Like or Follow the companies that you want to keep an eye on and be ready to jump on in there!

Real Nappy Week is a fantastic way to promote the use of cloth nappies – so see this week as your chance to go, in your friend’s eyes, a little cloth nuts!

Talk about them
Show them to people
Perhaps get your friends around for a little demo.
Whip them out in public and change your baby somewhere where people can see!
Strike up a random conversation about them with someone.
Stalk pregnant ladies in the street and bombard them with fluffy information….

Ok. Seriously – don’t do the last thing – you’ll freak them out and potentially put them off! But there are ways that you can subtly (ish) drop the concept of Real Nappies into a conversation and gently steer people around to either your way of thinking, or just towards the idea of giving them a go!

One thing that I’ve learnt since doing my nappy talks at various baby groups is that people really do see cloth nappies as hard work (pfffft! they’re so easy!) and they also see it as an all or nothing decision. I’ve been telling people that you can use both cloth and disposables, if that suits your lifestyle better and the fascinating thing about that is most of the people who have tried have moved over to full time cloth use once they realise it’s ok!

So, there isn’t a moment to lose! Get out there. Buy fluff! Enter competitions! Chat about fluff! Go to a local event!

But most importantly

PROMOTE FLUFF. GET THOSE CUTE LITTLE PADDED BOTTOMS OUT ON SHOW AND LET THE WORLD KNOW HOW UTTERLY BRILLIANT FLUFFY BOTTOMS ARE!

Oh…and have I mentioned that I’ll be running TWO FLUFFY GIVEAWAYS next week?
YAY!!!!

Nursery and Nappies

20120413-201355.jpg

When we first thought about the fact that we were going to have to send Monkey to nursery, the things that crossed our minds were the usual stuff. How much would it cost? Would we like the way in which the nursery did things? Would they help support us, considering that Monkey is still (and will continue to be) predominantly breastfed? How would our non-routine led baby settle into a nursery environment?

I have to be honest, I started getting into a little bit of a tizzy about it all. The choice of nursery wasn’t actually too difficult as I used to work in nursery education and I knew the options locally. For those of you who might be in a similar situation, it’s really a case of looking at what you do at home. Do you have a routine or are you more baby-led? If you’re more baby-led then a nursery that adopts a more child-centred, relaxed approach would probably suit you more than one that has strict timings and routines. I did look at one nursery that had me seething with anger as they expected Monkey to sleep at x time and eat at x time. I don’t have a set pattern as an adult, so how on earth could a baby? Madness! (in my opinion!)

The reason I was in a tizzy was more linked to the fact that Monkey still prefers napping on me, no matter what I do to try and persuade him that other options are ok. The nursery that I’ve found are absolutely lovely and he’ll be cuddled to sleep if necessary. I know some of you might be screaming, ‘rod for your own back’, but if that’s what he needs then it’s fine. I don’t know of any adults who need to be cuddled to sleep or require a Mummy to nap on, so I’m sure that Monkey will sort himself out in due course!

What has been interesting is how keen the nursery has been to support my decision in using cloth nappies. I rang around a few nurseries before I even properly started and some of them were very very reticent indeed, even suggesting that he should wear their disposables (that they kindly include within the fees) whilst he’s there. I didn’t bother ringing them back to make viewing appointments.

The thing that bugged me the most was that they weren’t even interested in discussing it, even though as a nursery they are meant to support the parent’s decisions. I know of a few cloth bum mums that have had these issues, or have had nurseries really not try very hard with cloth, sending them home in back-to-front nappies, or not putting them on properly and then complaining about leaks. Being the utter cynic that I can be (on a bad hair day), that does seem like a lack of effort and even an underhand way of making a less confident mum cave and allow their child to wear disposables at nursery…

However, there’s obviously a distinct lack of training when it comes to using cloth nappies in nurseries. Perhaps that should be included in one of the nursery nursing modules of study?

I’m looking forward to seeing how well Monkey and his lovely fluffy nappies get on at nursery. I’ve been sensible, choosing a stash of easy-to-use nappies for nursery (mainly Tots Bots Easyfits and Bum Genius V3′s and V4′s) as I think that sending the same kind of nappy will be less confusing!

Twists and turns.

As a first time Mum, I had all these grand ideas in my head of what kind of Mum I’d be. What I’d do and what I wouldn’t. I had a very specific birth plan that I really hoped would work out (waterbirth, TENS, Gas & Air and, god forbid, no other drugs). My baby was going to wear cloth nappies, I was going to just breastfeed, I would only feed him/her homemade organic food, I’d never allow him to get into a routine of falling asleep on me and of course he’d sleep in his lovely moses basket/ crib/ cotbed. I’d try to use a sling but I’d have a pram as well, I’d never even vaguely consider elimination communication and I did think that attachment parents were making rods for their own backs. Whilst I wanted to be close to my baby and nuture him/her as much as possible, I wanted him to ‘learn to self settle’.

Oh god. Things have changed. My perspective on many things, including the above has altered HUGELY. It’s amazing how utterly unprepared you are for such a little, teeny person invading your life, albeit in an amazing way that you wouldn’t change for the world.

Luckily, for me, a lot of things I wanted to do have worked out. I got the birth I wanted, even though (apparently) I did yell that I wanted a ******* epidural at the time when my son’s head was crowning. Yup…that was obviously not going to happen! I was very lucky – there’s only one waterbirthing pool in our local hospital, and I got it. Lots of other ladies aren’t so lucky. I was also incredibly fortunate that there were no other complications at birth, although Monkey will have to have a little operation when he’s older.

Yes, I got to (so far) use cloth nappies on my little one, although I have had to use some disposables at night due to the thicker night nappies making his reflux much worse. I wasn’t a happy bunny when that happened, but it wasn’t the end of the world.

Breastfeeding has been a huge struggle for me and I’m now in the amazing position where not only is Monkey pretty much exclusively breastfed, I’m actually managing to pump and freeze a good amount for sending to nursery with him. I still have some prescription lactose free formula just in case, but thanks to the amazing support that I’ve had from my local breastfeeding specialists, I’ve managed to achieve that goal.

As far as food is concerned, yes I do actually mainly manage to give Monkey homemade stuff. But a few (organic) pouches of food have crept into his diet and I’m fine with that. I was originally going to do just Baby Led Weaning, and I was very passionate about it – but after the specialists told us that he needed some purees/ porridge to help with his reflux, I did relent and there was a massive improvement. He loves his food and is really starting to enjoy playing with finger foods now, which is great. Seeing him shove a stem of broccoli into his face is hilarious and he adores sucking on French toast! Sometimes being a bit more relaxed about things is better and I’m happy with the balance that I now have. I did beat myself up about not doing pure BLW, but he’s happy – so I am!

Attachment parenting is a whole other issue! After Monkey was born, Mr Clothbum and I went with what felt right after struggling with a baby that just would not settle, no matter what we did. We soon discovered that he had very bad colic and reflux and that cosleeping, with him in a more upright position, was the way forward. And we haven’t really looked back. Monkey does go into his cot at night but in the early hours of the morning he’s usually in with us, cluster feeding on Mummy. It works – brilliantly – and we both love having our baby so close. He’s gradually learning to settle himself but it’s a slow process and we’re fine with that too. He’ll get there – when he’s ready.

I know that it means that he won’t go easily to others overnight at the moment, but that’s really not an issue for us. We have no family that live near us, so there’s no one that Monkey will be going to stay with on his own, really. Also, as a breastfed baby – its easier to keep him near me anyway. Then I don’t have the hassle of expressing more than I need to.

Since having him I’ve started to read more on the subject and found that a lot of the things that we’re doing (that I had no name for) are linked to the work of Dr Sears (and attachment parenting – yes, I really had no concept of it before!) His way of thinking, in my book, is well worth a read and I also absolutely love Mayim Bialik (she used to play Blossom). Her approach to parenting is a very refreshing one and one that sits very well with me. There’s a bit of a debate about her decision to circumcise her sons, but in my opinion, that’s her choice as a Jew. I personally wouldn’t circumcise unless there were medical grounds, but I’m not a religious person so I don’t want to judge others and their beliefs.

Elimination communication is another area that I’ve been reading into with a degree of fascination. I’m nowhere brave enough to attempt this, but I am going to start putting Monkey on a potty after his meals once he is stronger and more secure at sitting up. That’s the method that my mother-in-law, and other people of her generation, used with their children and lots of us potty trained much earlier than children do nowadays. But if Monkey does PT early – I’ll have to stop using my lovely nappies!

Food for thought!
